Festival Suisse - Swiss Festival

Next Friday and Saturday, Sutton will celebrate the Swiss National Day. Word has it that it is the largest celebration outside of Switzerland. Sutton will be covered in red and white.

Mont Tricot will be celebrating as well:

• Knit/crochet a slice of  Swiss cheese or a brick of swiss cheese and get one skein of yarn at 20% off (knit piece does not have to look like the image - just use your imagination)

Swiss National Day Celebration : 27 & 28 July 2012

Friday, get ready for a great afternoon and evening with the sidewalk sale, exposition of Swiss artists at Farfelu from 11:00am to 9:00pm, also a mini fair in part of the parking lot beside the post office with local products for sale.  There will also be musicians playing from 3:00pm to 9:00pm.
There are also Tombola tickets on sale at the Information Office at 24A, Principale South. First prize is 2 tickets Montreal-Zurich.
Saturday, for the 36th year the Swiss Community will gather at Mont SUTTON to celebrate the Swiss national holiday. Open to all for a small entry fee, the day long celebration features Swiss music, folkloric events, foods and sports such as rifle shooting. Enjoy hiking the mountain and dancing in the evening.

Knitting Tip of the day! Astuce de Tricot pour la journée!

 I love to knit socks. I definitely don't do the same pattern each time. I always seem to need to excitement with either the yarn or the pattern. My favorite way to knit them is on 4 double pointed needles. I have tried magic loop and 2 circulars but there is just something quite fun about the small dpns that keep me fascinated. However, when I get to the heel flap, I start to get annoyed and jabbed by those pesky pointed sticks that are not being used.  My solution: put those stitches on a holder or waste yarn to get them out of them out of the way. With this pair, I tried the Everyday Peacocks stitch holder, available at Mont Tricot. I found it was the perfect length without having to squish too many stitched together or without having something else poke out. Plus, it is gorgeous. The only drawback: I did not want to finish the heel cause it looked too pretty.

J'adore tricoter des bas mais je n'aime jamais refaire le même patron  . J'ai toujours besoin d'avoir de l'escitation avec une nouvelle laine ou un autre patron. Ma façon préférée de les tricotés c'est avec 4 aiguilles à double point. J'ai essayé avec le magic loop et avec 2 aiguilles cirulaires mais il y a vraiement quelquechose des avec les petites aiguilles qui me fascinent. Toutefois, je n'aime pas quand on commence à faire le talon et les petites aiguilles pointues s'enfoncent dans ma main. Ma solution: mettre les mailles en attentes. Avec cette paire que je tricote, j'ai decidé d'essayer les "stitch holders" d' Everyday Peacocks disponible chez Mont Tricot. J'ai découvert qu'ils sont d'une longueur parfaite sans avoir les mailles trop tassées ou avoir un bout qui dépasse. En plus, c'est tellement beau.  Le seule défaut: je ne voulais pas continuer mon talon parce que c'était trop beau.

This past week, I got to try out a new product from Lisa from PetitesTuques. Since she picked up knitting when she was expecting her first child, she hasn't been able to put down her needles. She also could not stop want to create her very own designs. She has had fun experimenting with knitwear design and even has 2 published patterns on knitpicks website. Now, she has come up with a handy product to help others like herself who want to try their hand at designing their own projects: Knitting Rockstar

Lucky for me, I got to try it out this week. I find that I have always been creating my own designs, but it is not until I had my shop that others wanted to know how I did it. While I often assume that whatever came out of my head and onto the needles would be easy to replicate, I often forget what I did.

A few weeks ago when Lisa mentioned what she was working on, I got quite excited. Maybe now I might have a better chance of writing down what I knit when the creative spirit hits. Last Saturday, Julie Asselin came to the store to show me all her beautiful hand-dyed wool. Of course, they were all gorgeous and I just had to keep a skein of sorbet pink bulky yarn. I could not even wait until the next day to start working with it. It feels absolutely squishy and yummy. So, off I went to my sister-in-laws and started experimenting. I felt for cables so I fiddles a bit with a few widths of cables. Thankfully, I had the design journal with me so I could jot down a few notes, sketch what was in my mind. The abbreviations were quite helpful since I ended up sitting by the campfire for most of the creative process and my computer or other knitting books were not around. Stay tuned for the campfire tuque pattern coming out for the launch of Julie's bulky weight yarn at Mont Tricot.

Yesterday, Lisa came over to Mont Tricot and we held an informal launch party. Customer enjoyed meeting her and and getting to know more about the design process and how they too could try it. We also got sample some delicious chocolats from the new chocolate store (Chocolat Colombe) down 2 doors down. What a great mix knitting and chocolate!!!

Cette semaine j'ai eu la chance d'essayer un nouveau produite de Lisa de  PetitesTuques. Depuis qu'elle a commencé a tricoté quand elle attendait son premier enfant, elle n'a pas pu lâcher ses aiguilles. En plus, elle n'a pas pu  s'empêcher de creer ses propres modèles. Elle s'amuse à experimenter avec la conception des patrons et elle a déjà publié 2 patrons sur le siteweb de knitpicks. Maintenant avec la boutique, mes clients veulent savoir comment j'ai fait mon tricot. Je présume toujours que c'est facile de reproduire ce que j'ai fait mais la réalité est que j'oublie ce que j'ai fait.

Il y a quelques semaines quand Lisa a mentionné son projet, j'étais bien contente. Peut-être maintenat j'aurai une meilleure chance à écrire ce que je tricote quand l'esprit créatif arrive. Samedi dernier, Julie Asselin est venue au magasin  pour me montrer sa belle laine teinte à la main. Quand j'ai vue sa grosse laine coleur sorbet, il fallait absolument que j'en garde un écheveau pour en jouer avec. Je ne pouvais pas attendre au lendemain. Alors, ce soir chez ma bele-soeur, j'ai commencé à experimenter. J'avais envie de faire des torsades. Donc, j,ai commencé à en essayer de plusieurs grosseurs. Heureusement, j'avais mon cahier de design avec moi et j'ai pu écrire ce que je faisais et faire quelques croquis de ce que je voulais. Les abbreviations étaient vraiment utiles surtout que j'étais au tour du camp de feu pour la plupart du temps et je n'avais ni mon ordinateur ni des livres de tricot. Restez à l'écoute pour le lancement de la tuque lors de l'arrivée de la laine de Julie chez Mont Tricot.

Hier, Lisa est venue chez Mont Tricot  et on a fait un lancement informel du cahier. Les clients ont bien appréciés de la rencontrer et en savoir plus sur le processus du design et comment eux aussi peuvent l'essayer. En plus, on a eu la chance de déguster de très bons  chocolats de la nouvelle boutique de Chocolat, Chocolats Colombe, qui est ouvert proche de Mont Tricot.

Quel beau mariage: le chocolat et le tricot!!!

Christmas in July - Noël en juillet

Nope, you are not seeing things. It is Christmas in July. Actually for most knitters, Christmas begins about now. Since knitting gifts takes decidedly more time than popping in to a store, now is when we should all start thinking about what we want to knit as Christmas gifts.

I thought I would help us all with some cool ideas that you can work on now and not be caught surprising your love one with a ball of yarn an a coupon for a knitted item.

Socks - Always a favorite for the recipient since no one else will have one just like it. A great summer project because you can always have it on the go with you wherever your summer travels might take you.

How about trying a new pattern?

Non, vous ne rêvez pas. C'est Noël en juillet. En fait, pour beaucoup de tricoteurs, tricoteuses Noël commence au mois de juillet. Ça prend certainement pas mal plus de temps à planifier et faire des cadeaux à la main que d'en acheter.

J'ai penser que je pouvais proposer des idées qu'on peux commencer dès maintenant pour pas être pris au dépourvu.

Des bas - toujours bien reçus et bien aimés. Personne aura exactement les mêmes. Un très bon projet d'été - pas très grand, pas trop chaud.

Pourquoi ne pas essayer un nouveaux patron??

The criss-cross socks from Berroco are a free pattern. Knit in the comfort sock which is a nylon, acrylic blend, the stitches will stand out. This yarn is super soft and hardwearing and will only set you back $8 a ball.

The Kalajoki pattern would look great in Indigo Moon or Sweet Georgia. This free pattern would look great in solids or semi solids to reflect the Kalajoki river which winds its way through Finland and empties into the Baltic Sea. Like the river, these socks feature a twisted rib pattern that undulates down the foot. Sounds exotic!

For the wacky person in your life, try the longitudinal socks. Knit in zauberball, you will have as much fun knitting this pair as the recipient will wearing them. 

Pour la personne farfelue dans votre vie, essayez les bas longitudinal.  Tricotés avec la laine zauberball, vous auriez autant de plaisir à les tricoter que celui qui les réçoit aura à les porter.

  

 Stepping Stones by Clara Parkes is a great pattern with a super reinforced heel for those who wear their socks out too quickly. This is a great pattern for both men and women. Change the colour and change the look. So many yarns to choose from....

Fun times at Mont Tricot - On s'amuse chez Mont Tricot

We had a great weekend at Mont Tricot. 
On Saturday, we had a visit from Julie Asselin. She lives in Coaticook and she hand dyes yarn. She has a great eye for colour and all things retro. Emily and I had a great time chatting with her and checking out all of her goodies. I can't wait until we get some of her yummy yarns. We kept a few skeins to play with.
Last night, I had a great time playing with hand-dyed bulky wool/alpaca blend. Sitting by the campfire, I came up with a cool, campfire hat pattern which will be published as soon as Julie's yarn makes its début at Mont Tricot. Stay tuned....
Today, I got to work early so that I could write down the pattern. Then, we had a great time when Kam from Everyday Peacocks came to visit.
Not only did she brings us some very cool new stitch markers and other knitting jewelry, she also spent the whole afternoon playing with yarn and hanging out with us. We playing with earrings, crochet hooks and yarn.
We were silly and giggled. We planned the knitting workshop and had a great time.

Then, by surprise, my mother in law and sister in law came to hand out as well. It was a real treat to have them come by.


Then, I came home. Had dinner with the family and spent a little more time knitting so that I could prop up Chulita's little head. Talk about being spoiled....












On a eu une très belle fin de semaine chez Mont Tricot. 

Samedi, on a eu la visite de Julie Asselin. Elle habite à Coaticook  et elle  teint de la laine à la main. Elle a un très bon oeil pour la couleur et  tout ce qui est retro.  Emilie et moi, nous nous sommes bien amusés à parler avec elle et mieux la connaître. En plus elles nous a apporté un paquet de belles choses pour nous donner le goût. J'ai hâte d'avoir ses laines au magasin. On a garder quelques échevaux pour jouer avec.



Hier soir, j'ai joué avec un bel échevau de laine mélangé avec de l'alpaga. Assise proche du camp de feu, j'ai crée une belle touque qui aura le patron publier dès que la laine de Julie arrive chez Mont Tricot. À suivre....


Aujourd'hui, je suis allée de bonheur au magasin pour écrire le patron. Plus tard, on a eu la visite de Kam d' Everyday Peacocks. Non seulement, qu'elle nous a amené des beaux anneaux de répères pour le tricot et d'autres beaux bijoux pour le tricot, mais elle est restée toute l'après midi pour jouer avec de la laine avec nous. En bref, on s'est bien amusé tous ensemble.

Puis, ma belle mère et ma belle soeur sont arrivées pour tricoter avec nous aussi.


Après, on est rentré chez nous pour souper. Chulita était bien contente de retrouver du comfort sur une balle de laine...

Yarn Bombing in Frelighsburg - Tricot Graffitti à Frelighsburg

Festiv'Art is a great celebration of Art held in Frelighsburg, Qc at the beginning of September. This year, it is very exciting to see that knitting is becoming somewhat of a centerpiece of the festival. The knitter's of Frelighsburg are planning on covering Frelighsburg with fibres that are knit and crocheted. Not wanting to be left behind, Knitter's from surrounding areas have joined in as well. 

Sutton's lovely,  Daniela Pellis met with the organizers and the Sutton knitters has been officially assigned  our own building. 

 

We have the entire facade and a big old maple on the side. We have carte blanche to do whatever we wish. 

 

Details:

Columns 9 1/2ft high, 36" circumference, slightly tapered at the top.

This fun project is open to anyone who would like to participate and contribute (knitting, crochet, felting, embroidery, etc).

Your participation is greatly appreciated!! Please bring us your squares of knitting, crochet, UFO knitting projects (Unfinished objects) that could be used, crochet flowers, pompoms, anything made of fibre. The shape and colour does not matter. We have a keen team of knitters with an artistic eye who will put it all together. 

 

All donations of knitted or crocheted items including any yarn that can be used for the project can be dropped off at Mont Tricot which will become sort of a donations headquarters.

All participants will be invited to signa piece of fabric which will be integrated into our collective work. For those who have already submitted items, please stop by Mont Tricot and sign the collective calling card for the knitters of Sutton.

If you don't live in Sutton, but still want to participate, don't worry we would love to have your contributions. you can either stop by Mont Tricot with your items or send them by post:

Dans le cadre du Festiv'Art, un grand mouvement est en cours pour recouvrir de tricot tot le village de Frelighsburg et les tricoteurs de Sutton se joignent au mouvement! La belle, Daniela Pellis, a rencontré les organisateurs et maintenant on a un bâtiment attitré à Sutton:
La façaade ainsi qu'un gros érable mature devant sont à recouvrir. Les 4 colonnes mesurent 9 pieds et demi et ont une circomférence de 36 pouces.

Votre participation serait grandement appréciée!!!!
Apportez-nous des carrés de tricot ou crochet, des projets de tricot non-terminés que l'on pourrait utiliser, des fleurs en tricot, n'importe quoi fait des fibres. Nous ramassons aussi les balles de laines si vous avez des restant.

Knitting workshop - Atelier de Tricot

It is official: things are moving and shaking at Mont Tricot. The calender of courses is ready, but the big question is how are we ever going to give courses in the store this fall when it is already overflowing with yarn? Well, we are pleased to announce that Mont Tricot will be having our very own workshop dedicated to the classes and  workshops. Here is where you come in. I need your help. I would love your advice on what you would like the workshop to look like. I want it to be as inviting as the store, conducive to learning, having fun and being silly. I want it to have a community feel. Anyone out there interested in helping me set it up??

C'est officiel: ça bouge à Mont Tricot. Le calendrier des cours est prêt. Mais, la grosse question est comment va-t-on donner des cours à l'automne dans le magasin quand ça débourd déjà de laine?
Alors, Mont Tricot est fier de vous annoncer qu'il y aura une salle dédier au cours et ateliers de tricot. Maintenant, j'ai besoin de vour. J'aimerai votre avis pour le design de l'atelier. Je veux qu"il soit aussi charmant et invitant que le magasin. Je veux qu'il soit un lieu où on peut apprendre et s'amuser. Je veux qu'il aie une ambiance communautaire. Y aura-t-il quelqu'un qui aimerait m'aider à tout installer??

Indigo Moon Explosion

What a morning!! First, I found out that Tintoretto was going to be open. I was able to score my favorite strawberry white chocolate scone. Then, I went to the post office and found out I had 2 glorious boxes of Indigo Moon waiting for me.  It sure does feel like Christmas in July!

Quel beau matin! En premier, j'ai eu la belle surprise que Tinteretto était ouvert pour des scone et des soupes aujourd'hui. Alors, j'ai pu me procurer un délicieux scone aux fraises et au chocolat blanc. Ensuite, je suis allée à la poste pour trouver qu'il y avait 2 grosses boîtes d'Indigo Moon qui m'attendaient. On dirait que c'est Noël en juillet!!

It is only Monday, but I am already thinking of the weekend. Perhaps, because this week, we should be getting fresh new colors of Berroco's Weekend yarn.

Happy Canada! Joyeuse Fête du Canada!

This Canada, I really wanted to do something truly Canadian. I took this to mean that my knitting had to have a Canadian flair. I decided last night to cast on with a Canadian yarn (Camelspin from Handmaiden), the pattern was Villeray from Falling Stitches. I was even going to treat myself to some pretty little knitting jewelry from Everyday Peacocks. I was quite excited about the pattern because it is only 12 rows that repeat over and over. "Easy peasy lemon squeezy", I thought.

I did not however contend with the persistence of the black flies. The more I tried to knit, the more they buzzed and buzzed around my head. I tried to swat with my needles, but that was a scary proposition since the stitches and stitch holders lay vulnerable flying away. I made it to row 3 quite pleased with myself. Then, I started the barbeque. Being a great multitasker, I figured I could handle just about anything. By the time I got to dinner, I was well on my way and feeling pretty good about my all Canadian blog post for the next day.

Then, the storm hit. I grabbed my laptop and my knitting and other small items sitting by the campfire with me. Once inside, I realized that something was wrong. My stitch count was off, the stitch holder were not in the right place (but they were looking soo pretty. How could they be wrong?) I figured I should stop while I was ahead and I would continue in the morning. Morning came and it was no easier to figure out where my mistakes where. I completely unraveled what I had done and set about starting again.

By the time I got to the store things were moving along quite gracefully. The pattern was starting to show up. Soon enough, I started having customers and could not concentrate on it anymore so thought maybe I could try another semi-Canadian Project.


 I grabbed a skein of slubby blue from Fleece Artist . and the ever popular  Boutique Knits.


I decided quickly on the fawn earflap hat which not only seemed perfect for the yarn, but it would also give me a chance to use my Everyday Peacock stitch holder. Yippie!

Well, I am pleased to say the hat is on its way to becoming a hat. I will be you an update soon enough!

Pour la fête du Canada, je voulais faire quelque chose vraiement canadien. Alors, je me suis dit que mon tricot du jour devait être canadien. J'ai décidé hier soir de monter des mailles avec un fil Canadien (Camelspin de Handmaiden). Le patron était Villeray de Falling Stitches. Je voulais même me gâter avec des bijoux pour mon tricot de Everyday Peacocks. J'étais bien excité pour commencer et je penser bien réussir étant donner que le patron consister seulement en 12 rangs qui se répètent.

Je n'ai pas par contre penser aux mouches à chevreuil. Plus j'éssayais de tricoter, plus elles m'agassaient. J'ai beau essayé de les écraser avec mes aiguilles mais ce n'était point une bonne idée. Cela rendaient les mailles et les beaux marqueurs de mailles vulnerable. Malgré tout, j'ai réussit à faire 3 rangs et je commencer à prendre confiance avec le patron. Alors, j'ai parti le bbq. Étant très bonne à faire des multi-tâches, je penser que c'était bien parti mon kiki. À l'heure de souper, j'étais contente de mon progrès et du potential du poste pour mon blogue pour le lendemain.

 Tout d'un coup, la tempête est arrivée. J'ai pris très vite mon portable, mon tricot et d'autre petits objets que j'avais au tour du camp de feu. Rendue à l'intérieure, j'ai réalisé qu'il y avait quelque chose qui n'allait plus avec le tricot. Le nombre des mailles n'était pas correcte et les marqueurs de mailles n'étaient plus à la bonne place (je ne comprenais absolument rien. ils avaient l'air si beaux ses marqueurs de mailles. comment pouvaient - ils ne pas être correcte?) J'ai décidé d'arrêter et tout voir le lendemain. Le matin, j'ai bien étudier mon tricot mais je n'arriver pas à savoir où était l'erreur. Alors, j'ai tout défait et j'ai décidé de recommencer.

Quand je suis arrivée au magasin, tout aller bien. Les mailles et les marqueurs étaient bien à leur place et le motif commencer à apparaître. Mais, avec des clients qui commencer à arriver, j'avais de plus en plus de difficultés à me concentrer. Donc, j'ai décider d'entreprendre un autre projet semi-canadien. 

J'ai pris un écheveau de slubby blue de Fleece Artist . et le livre très populaire, Boutique Knits. .

J'ai choisi le pattron de la tuque avec l'oreillette. Il semblait parfait pour la laine et en plus ça me donnerai une chance d'utiliser mon beau bijous pour tenir les mailles d'Everyday Peacocks. Youpie!!!
